Portland Oregon 1989
There is nothing like old news to spark a new idea. In the summer of 1989 Dan Sause and Arden Thomas came up with an idea for a record store that sold only local music from the Portland Oregon area. The idea came out of a need to sell their own home-made tape. The doors opened at 50 sw second in a glass inclosed 2nd floor space on August 3 1989. "What? " was the most common reaction. The first two months were fun, slow and included an exponential learning curve. In October the Oregonian needed a companian story to go with the news that the Dan Reed Network was going biig time and would be touring with THe Rolling Stones in Europe. Locals Only fit the bill. It was as if the fuse was lit and a few days later... Boom! We could barely keep up. We had full time jobs and this was supposed to be a fun sideline. Our sales grew with leaps and bounds over the next few years. Our role as an information center grew as well. It was the most fun we could have ever imagined. |
