We were having a fairly usual day at Locals Only, people stopping by to talk about music and life, when my partner Don put on a new tape we had gotten in. Immediately my ears perked up. The three of us Arden, Don and Myself looked at each other and smiled. I remember immediately asking Don what he had put on... It was Rubberneck. I had fully expected an alternative rock band (that was the sound of the day) FULL ON FUNK was totally unexpected, not only could these guys play they had done their home work. ( a very unpopular idea at the time). We immediately put the tape in heavy rotation in-store and sold through the first batch in short order. Over time we got to know these guys pretty well. They were a hard working band that could really play. It was a privilege to help them manufacture their first CD. The recording was world class and was an easy album to sell. “Nosotros” is a classic case of a Northwest Band not listening to what everybody else was doing, and just doing what they loved. All of their albums are great recordings and are available on-line somewhere. We have just a few of the original pressing left that we had to pull from distribution because they had no bar code. So order soon or they will be gone

BIO

In 1991 Chilean born brothers Ricardo and Pablo Ojeda set out to form a band that would express the rhythms of the 70’s style Funk and Disco that they had grown up with along with the sounds of Latin music that had filled their home as children. The band they formed was Rubberneck and over the next fifteen years Rubberneck would be the band to see if you wanted to get down.

Several of Portland’s most talented musicians performed with Rubberneck over those fifteen years including Brian Foxworth, Tim Bryson, Paul Mazzio, Renato Caranto, and Reinhardt Melz just to name a few. Rubberneck toured extensively performing over 200 shows a year with such greats as Maceo Parker, George Clinton, and War.

After performing and living in Malaga, Spain for an entire summer Rubberneck returned to the United States and released it’s debut CD Nosotros which instantly became a top seller in the Portland local scene.

Following the success of Nosotros a few years later Rubberneck released it’s second album El Niño which included Santana percussionist extraordinaire Raul Rekow. El Niño was another success with a sold out CD release party at Portland, Oregon’s Crystal Ballroom.

Rubberneck’s final album EgoManic featured all of the Funk Rubberneck fans came to expect but with a deeper melodic content than had previously been recorded. EgoManic featured Northwest drumming legend Bruce Carter who previously performed with Cameo, Pleasure, and Kenny G.

Although Rubberneck is no longer together their influence can still be felt in the Northwest music scene.
